LegalZoom believes everyone should have access to legal expertise when they need it, no matter who they are or what their socioeconomic status may be. That's why some of our most important work extends beyond our business. This includes our commitment to environmental, social, and governance (ESG) matters, where our people-first focus guides how we do business, foster trust, and build long-term value.

Our Board, Executive Team, and ESG Committee are helping us set our goals to expand our efforts in creating positive impact.

Mission

Equal opportunity is at the core of what we do. We believe small businesses are the backbone of our economy and the heartbeat of local communities. In providing access to affordable legal and tax expertise, we've lowered the barrier to entry for entrepreneurs and helped form over 4 million small businesses in the U.S.

  • Democratizing law
    • We've launched LZ Legal Services, making us the first publicly-traded company to own and operate a law firm. Because of this, we are able to create more affordable legal services like our trademark product, which costs 75% less than a traditional offline attorney.*
  • Affordable access
    • We're committed to developing new ways to offer low-cost and free business formation products for customers across the country. From offering free business formations in a dozen states, to donating over $3 million in products, we are always working on new ways to bring needed legal help to those who need it most.

Social impact

Our Social Impact team is focused on leveling the playing field and closing the justice gap by providing funding, products, and resources to underserved and underrepresented communities.

  • Millions for small businesses
    • Together with the NBA, WNBA, and NBA G League, we've committed over $6 million dollars in grants and services to support small businesses with Fast Break for Small Business.
  • Partnering with nonprofits
    • We've teamed up with Accion Opportunity Fund and Defy Ventures, contributing over $600,000 in funding since 2021. With these partnerships, we help foster entrepreneurship among communities of color, women, immigrants, and formerly incarcerated people.
  • Investing in social entrepreneurship
    • Through the University of Southern California (USC) Marshall School of Business, we created a $30,000 scholarship for the school's Brittingham Social Enterprise Lab (BSEL)—one of the only Master's programs in the U.S. dedicated to social entrepreneurship.

People

Our people are the cornerstone of everything we do. We aim to hire those who are committed to furthering our mission of making a positive impact in the community. Our goal is to foster a culture of employee wellness, diversity, and inclusion.

  • Diversity, equity, and inclusion
    • We're committed to a culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DE&I). Our C-Team, of which 65% identifies as either a woman or person of color, chairs our individually funded five Employee Networks to help further our culture of DE&I. Our diverse board consists of three women directors, four racially/ethnically diverse directors and one LGBTQIA+ director.
  • Culture of giving
    • Our giving policy provides every employee time off for community service and dollar-for-dollar donation matching up to $500 annually through our LegalZoom Gives platform. In 2021, our employees raised over $70,000 to various causes and initiatives and gave over 500 hours of community service time. Additionally, we have an annual Impact Week dedicated to uniting as a company to give back to the community.
  • Employee wellness
    • We prioritize mental health and work/life balance with a remote-first workplace and an annual wellness week to encourage emplyees to relax and recharge. Additionally, we offer mental and physical health benefits, fertility coverage, and time off to vote.

Responsible operations

As we work on setting our ESG commitments and goals, we look for ways to hold ourselves responsible for our environmental impact, data security, and ethics.

  • Governance
  • Data security & privacy
    • We ensure the security and privacy of our data by implementing practices that maintain physical, technical, and administrative safeguards. We conduct regular risk assessments to evaluate the effectiveness of our program and participate in third-party audits of our privacy practices.
